Who's Jim Barnum?

Presentation by Jim Barnum, Nov. 18, 2004

Antigonish Highland Skateboarding Association (AHSA) in conjunction with the Antigonish Regional Development Authority (ARDA), is hosting a presentation by Jim Barnum, President of Spectrum Skatepark Creations Limited, on November 18, 2004 at 7:30 pm in the Main Hall of Saint Ninian Place and the public is invited to attend.

The event will serve as a community consultation meeting to introduce the public to AHSA's vision for a world-class skatepark in the Antigonish area, and will provide an opportunity to have questions answered by an expert.

Returning to Antigonish after a previous visit in the spring, Barnum is one of the most knowledgeable skateboard park designers in the country. It's worth noting that Spectrum has won a number of international design and construction awards and has designed more than 30 skateparks in BC and a wave of concrete skateparks is now making its way from west to east across the continent. Barnum has been involved in the design and/or construction of such skateparks as Shaw Millennium Park in Calgary, AB (the largest public outdoor skatepark in the world), Metro Skatepark in Burnaby, and Markham Skatepark which when finished will the largest skatepark in Ontario. Closer to home, Barnum recently designed skateparks for Saint John, and St. John's and is about to design skateparks for Halifax and Coxheath/Sydney River, which explains the reason for his trip to Nova Scotia later this month. In addition, he'll be visiting Chester and Truro, where there is interest in having him design skateparks. Barnum was the keynote speaker at the 3rd Annual Maritime Skatepark Conference in Cole Harbour earlier this year.

Spectrum is Canada's only skatepark design firm specializing in Municipal concrete skateparks and Barnum is interested in helping smaller communities get quality low-budget concrete skateparks. "My interest is mostly as a skateboarder who knows that concrete parks are the best thing for everyone. I do quite a bit of reduced rate and volunteer work. This is because I want to see towns spend their money in the best way possible—I want the young skaters of that town to have the same experience I had growing up—the experience of a sweet concrete skatepark!"

AHSA has been researching skateparks for more than two years, and fundraising towards its goal of a professionally designed concrete skatepark in the area. Although the park would be designed by Spectrum, it would be built using local contractors and materials.

The group plans to present its plan to Town and County Councils in December, which will be the group's third request for a skatepark in as many years. This also follows efforts of previous groups over the past ten years to get a skatepark in the Antigonish area.
