The 4th annual Maritime Skatepark Conference was a success! The one-day event, organized by the Recreational Facilities Association of NS, was held in Lunenburg May 14, and came about as a response to the phenomenal growth of skateboarding and the resulting interest in developing skateparks.

Over 40 attended from across Nova Scotia, including Rec Directors from Truro, Barrington, Digby, Clark's Harbour, Lunenburg, Bridgewater and Chester. Of the above, Clark's Harbour already has a skatepark and the others are in the planning stages.

Six AHSA members attended: Melinda MacKenzie, Dolna Garbary, Scott Besaw, Jordan Swinkels, John Garbary and Jesse MacKenzie.

Keynote speaker Chris Parry, Executive Director of the Canadian Amateur Skateboarding Association (CASA), described the phenomenal growth of the sport and discussed skateboarding on a national level, and how skateboarders in Nova Scotia can become more involved.

Chris told us about the strong mentorship that happens naturally at skateparks, and how skateboarding's one of the few recreational activities that different ages participate in together. For example, he skates regularly with his two children, aged 6 and 8 in Vancouver, where it's not uncommon to see whole families skating together. He told us how older skaters look out for younger ones and often help them learn new tricks and techniques.

The conference also featured Chris Demarest of Frank Cowen Insurance, one of Canada's leading municipal insurance companies. Chris discussed risk management and potential liability issues. (By the way, Frank Cowen Company Limited insures both the Town of Antigonish and the County of Antigonish.)

In the afternoon, Halifax skateboarder Kirstan Moore, of Heartwood Centre for Community Youth Development, spoke about how to engage youth. He also organized us into rotating groups so we could share ideas on topics key to getting a skatepark.

The conference was held right beside Lunenburg's skatepark, so our skaters had lots of fun... they skated until dark and were back at it the next morning before breakfast! We came back inspired to continue efforts to develop a skatepark at home in Antigonish.
