Temporary sk8park woes

Update, July 13, 2007:

Until further notice, the temporary skatepark located on the #7 Highway, is closed.

It is closed because there is no longer any liability insurance on the park.

The park opened in 2004 and the Town insured it for the first two years. But the Town has had a change of policy, such that they can no longer insure the skatepark.

The Town asked AHSA to insure the park and was willing to pay part of the premium, but AHSA was unable to find an insurer.

Until the liability issue is settled, the park will remain closed. The County will be putting the ramps into storage.

There are more than 450 outdoor skateparks in Canada, and the overwhelming majority are municipally owned and insured. Renowned skatepark risk management expert Doug Wyseman* doesn't know of any skateparks that are insured by a community group.

History

* Doug Wyseman surveyed over 1,000 skatepark operators all over North America, and the results are published in “Risk Management and Skateboard Parks”, a 48-page manual used by municipalities all over North America.
