Park opening to feature slave auction Pre-publicity - Casket Corning's Convenience Store

Grand opening a success!!!

To date, nearly $1,800 has been raised from the skatepark grand opening held at Broken Board Hill on Saturday July 25th. It's hoped that the amount will grow, as councillors who weren't in attendance are invited to meet Town Councillor Diane Roberts' challenge to donate $100 each.

Fourteen youth took part in a "slave auction", volunteering to work during the summer and donate the proceeds to the skatepark fund. In addition, To Your Door Bicycle Delivery & Courier Servicedonated 5 free deliveries. Under the direction of auctioneers Brian Patton and 101.5 The Hawk's Bob MacEachern, the auction has already generated $1,440.

Bayfield skateboarder Jordan Swinkels volunteered 30 hours, which sold for $225, winning him a prize for fetching the highest bid. Antigonish skater Pete Norman came a close second, raising $150.

Town Councillor Roberts didn't need any work done by youth, so instead she volunteered herself as a "slave", namely to make sandwiches to bring to the skatepark over the summer, an offer that fetched $60. Also, Roberts donated $100 from her own pocket to the cause, challenging all other Town and County Councillors to do the same.

County Councillor Donnie MacDonald also participated in the event, and quickly matched Roberts' donation of $100.

County Councillor Mary MacLellan expressed her support for the fundraiser via email: Like your idea! Shows you are willing to WORK to get a Park!! That's important. Mary is arranging to hire a youth volunteer too.

Prizes were a skateboard deck (thanks to Proskates for a contribution), and gift certificates donated by the Tall and Small Café.

A huge thanks to 101.5 The Hawk for publicizing the event and providing two of their staff, Bob MacEachern and Genna Chisholm, and for bringing their Pepsi tent which provided much needed shade on the hottest day of the year.

Thanks to Superstore and Sobeys, for donations for the barbecue. And special thanks to Corning's Convenience Store for publicity and donating ice cream. Food sales generated $271.01.

Thanks to John Arthur Murphy for the use of his truck to borrow picnic tables from Dept. of Lands and Forests.

Other fundraisers at the grand opening were raffle ticket sales on a Rolling Stones Gift Basket, License to Play, and AHSA T-shirt sales.
