Decision to be made on Appleseed Drive site for skatepark

AHSA now awaits the County's decision as to whether or not to give the go-ahead for a skatepark on Appleseed Drive. [map]

As per the County's request, AHSA made a presentation to the public, the Warden and County Councillors, on Tuesday April 11 in the County Council Chambers.

The purpose of the meeting was to address neighbours' concerns, which were outlined in a petition, which generated 67 signatures. The petition stated that until certain issues are addressed, "we want our Municipal Councillors to defend our interests and halt this skateboard park project."

About 20 residents attended the meeting. Also in attendance were Warden Herb DeLorey, County Councillors, Wayne Weir, principal of Saint Andrew Junior School, Milfred Austin, principal of Antigonish Education Centre (the two schools across from the proposed skatepark site), William Cormier, Strait Regional School Board Director of Finance and Human Resources Services, RCMP Sgt. Jay MacInnis, Town Councillor Jack MacPherson and AHSA members.

The meeting started with an introduction/update by AHSA President John Besaw and was followed by a PowerPoint presentation, prepared and presented by AHSA board member and skater Dave Risk. AHSA Board member Brian Patton then presented AHSA's written response to residents' concerns. Residents then voiced specific concerns and Brian Patton, with help from other AHSA members, responded. Read the residents' concerns and AHSA's response.

Not on the list given to AHSA before the meeting was the concern that a skatepark would lower property values in the area, which was brought up at the meeting. Read material about the effect of skateparks on property values, found by AHSA after the meeting

Also, AHSA has been in touch with the Appraisal Institute of Canada, who recommends that a study be done by a licensed appraiser. There are four licensed appraisers in the area, listed on the Nova Scotia Real Estate Appraisal Association website
