Truro's progress
October 2006, update
Truro chooses New Line to design concrete skatepark
Truro to work with van der Zalm Landscape Architects
May 16, 2006
The Town of Truro is getting closer to its goal of a concrete skatepark.
A site has been secured, and the Town has applied to NS Health Promotion and Protection for $80K, for a street style park... they're expecting to hear back any day now. They expect to soon tender a design company to design the facility and provide construction plans.
The Town of Truro has approved up to $55K for the project (plus the land) and the Municipality of Colchester County $35K.
Over the past year, the Skate Park Action Team of Truro has raised just over $9,000. The Team is a local committee that was formed to spearhead the skatepark development; it includes Will Dunn (Truro Parks and Rec's Active Community/Community School Coordinator), 6 youth and two parents. The Team's fundraising has included a calendar which has so far netted more than $2,000, car washes, café nights, and a skate demo.
It has taken more than six months to get a site for the skatepark, which is to be located on Marshland Drive, near two ball fields, the Colchester Legion Stadium and across the street from the Tim Hortons Soccer Field, about 1 km from the centre of town, and next to the high school. The sports field has portable toilets, which will serve the skatepark too. The site is in an environmentally sensitive area, with the water table 36 inches down and not having a bowl will make it possible to use this site. A study done by an engineer has established that a skatepark will not have an adverse effect on the wetland.
Because the site borders a residential area (nearest house about 400 feet away), the Town of Truro's municipal planning office surveyed each household within a radius of 1,300 feet. According to Will Dunn (Truro Rec Dept's Active Community/Community School Coordinator), getting the municipal planning office to conduct a survey is a standard way to determine neighborhood interest and attitudes prior to site determination.
Survey results: 72% In Favor response; 24% Opposed and 4% no opinion. The municipality then met with residents who were opposed to the skatepark and reviewed their concerns, which were: supervision, lighting and fencing. As a result of working with residents, the municipality will take residents' concerns into consideration during the design phase. For example, they plan not to light the park, and to set up a regular schedule for maintenance staff and local police to do checks. Fencing is being considered too.
The local Tim Hortons owners have promised $30K. Tim Hortons in Truro have a history of generous community support: a few years ago they donated $40K for a soccer field, a few years later $25K for replacing the swimming pool in Victoria Park, and now the skatepark… which may be named after Tim Hortons (yet to be approved by the Town).
Truro has not yet chosen a designer for their skatepark. Like Antigonish, they had Jim Barnum of North Vancouver's Spectrum Skatepark Creations Limited do a presentation in November 2004, when Jim was in Nova Scotia fine-tuning designs in Halifax and Coxheath/Sydney River.
