Appleseed Drive site - background
After years of trying to find a home for a permanent skatepark, a possible site on Appleseed Drive was identified. The site was found by a consultant hired to do a feasibility study (summer 2004). The land, across from the Antigonish East Education Centre, was owned by the Province, and was available for free as long as it would be used to benefit the community, and not for a business venture. Since the land is located in the County, the County applied for ownership, which fit perfectly with AHSA's goal of a municipally owned skatepark. In its application, the County specified that the land would be used for a skatepark, and after a year of waiting, finally took possession in March 2006. So far, so good!
However, after neighbouring residents learned of the planned project, they circulated a petition of concerns, which generated 67 signatures.
The County held a Public Meeting to give AHSA the chance to address concerns raised by the residents. The meeting was held Tuesday April 11, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. in the County Council Chambers on Beech Hill Road. (View notice in The Casket).

Update, April 12: ASHA awaits decision re Appleseed Drive site
Based on the fact that there are at least 52 skateparks (view list) in or near residential districts across Canada and the US, AHSA believes the Appleseed Drive site is viable. Hence, AHSA would like to be given the opportunity to work with both the County and residents, to accommodate the concerns raised and make the skatepark an asset to the neighbourhood.
