Skateboarding coming to Annapolis County schools (Nova Scotia!)

Update, May 2
Forty girls came out to try skateboarding in April, many of them for the first time! Now the boys will get their turn.
----------

When André Bouchard, Active Living Facilitator for the County of Annapolis, heard about the Skate Pass program, he approached the School Board's Active Healthy Living Consultant Dawne MacLeod, who was interested. Next, Bouchard presented the idea to the County. This resulted in the formation of a partnership between the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board and the municipality, to purchase a Skate Pass curriculum kit, consisting of 20 sets of helmets, pads, and skateboards, with wheels designed not to damage gym floors. The boards also have softer bushings—part of the trucks that cushion turning, making them easier to control than regular skateboards.

Annapolis has joined a growing list of school districts from Colorado, Indiana, New York, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Germany, which already teach the Skate Pass curriculum.

The equipment will first be used for Girls Only Skateboarding workshops, to take place April 16-20, during Girls Healthy Living Week. A similar program for boys will take place in May. There is no charge to participate in the workshops.

Bouchard and the school board are working to bring in a Skate Pass instructor to train their gym teachers, after which the program will be integrated into phys ed classes in Annapolis Valley school, possibly as early as spring.

For an idea of how successful the program is, here's part of a testimonial written by Tyler Crippen, Phys Ed Teacher at Maria Mitchell Elementary School in Denver, Colorado:

"Our principal was so impressed to observe that many of the students who had struggled with discipline problems throughout the school year were shining stars in the skateboarding class. It was great to see these students radiate success!"
Complete testimonial letter

The Skate Pass Mission is "to bring skateboarding into schools across the world to address the growing trend of alternative activities; to emphasize the heart of skateboarding, which includes individual creative expression, cooperation, and friendship; and to support the health and well-being of students."
