Action Sports Ramp proposal

June 22
We are sad to report that our request for space in Columbus Field was turned down, because apparently there is no available space in Columbus Field. Our requirements were a space that measured 16 x 30 feet.

...

We expect the development of a permanent skatepark to take several years, and meanwhile our kids need a safe place to skate. The skateboarding association plans to present the following proposal at the regular monthly Town Council meeting on Monday June 21 at 7:00 PM:

Project Description - Summer 2010 Youth Active Living Opportunity

What:
A temporary Action Sports Ramp (halfpipe) to be built, used and constructed by local skateboarders and freestyle bikers, on either private or municipal land. The site must be highly visible and central. High walk-by and drive-by traffic provide passive community supervision, and also showcase the sport to the community.* Space requirements: 24 x 16 feet plus elbow room, grass or paved surface. [We plan to model our project on a very successful Action Sports Ramp which is located in downtown Annapolis Royal; link to photos]

Who:
The Antigonish RCMP, the Town of Antigonish, and the Antigonish Highland Skateboarding Association (AHSA) have collaboratively organized this initiative.** The Town will provide insurance for the facility, and the AHSA and its youth members will work with its community partners to raise the funds and will provide manpower for its construction. This ramp will provide the only legal location for skateboarding within Town limits.

When:
Construction will begin as soon as possible, pending finding a suitable site. It is hoped that the halfpipe will be ready for use in July and for the balance of the summer/early autumn. The intention is for the halfpipe to be stored indoors during the winter.

How it will be managed:
The RCMP and local youth will meet and negotiate an agreement, where the youth commit to some degree of self-management and self-policing, and responsibility for the facility and respect for its operating hours (dawn to dusk is suggested). The youth have already accepted this invitation to collaborate. The RCMP will undertake regular patrols of the facility, including after hours.

As a neighbour:
The Antigonish Highland Skateboarding Association will promote self-policing and responsible behaviour on the part of youth, and agrees to be a point of contact for community feedback. We appreciate your comments at the end of the summer, and of course during the summer as well. It is our interest to maintain a positive relationship with our community. The RCMP is of course the best point of contact for any observed misbehavior. We thank you in advance for your feedback.

* High visibility is important because in addition to providing built-in community supervision, it's easy for the RCMP to patrol. It also showcases the sport to the community, thereby encouraging appropriate behaviour.

**We also have the support of the Columbus Club, owner of Columbus Field. After a site is secured, we would like to invite the County to become involved too.

...

The purpose of Columbus Field is to provide recreational space for youth of all ages. Source: Bill MacNeil, President of Columbus Club:
“We do a lot for our younger kids at Columbus Field. There is a playground there that is designed for very young kids, but the purpose of Columbus Field was to look at much older kids as well.”
...“I think those age kids should have a place to call their own. I want to see if there is anything I can do about [finding a site for a skatepark]."
(MacNeil returns to municipal politics, The Casket, Sep 17, 08)

In 1997 a skatepark was built in Columbus Field. It took only three months to develop. Source But it was poorly designed and evolved into a basketball court. It was also too close to the playground. In 2005 it was bulldozed and turned into a flower garden. Source: History of Skateboarding in Antigonish

...

Both Antigonish and Annapolis Royal won top honours in the annual Communities in Bloom competition in 2009. Antigonish scored top national honours, and Annapolis Royal scored top international honours. It's interesting to note that Annapolis Royal won top international honors with their Action Sports Ramp in the middle of town.
